‘Nice’ – Hull City boss eyeing huge three games against promotion rivals

Sergej Jakirovic is relishing the challenge that Hull City’s fixture list has thrown up over the course of the next week, and wants his side to continue their impressive away form.

After beating Portsmouth to make it five successive wins on the road, attention turns to three games against their direct rivals in the race for promotion.

On Tuesday night City play their rearranged game at Ipswich Town, who sit fourth and level on points with the Tigers. Buoyed by a comfortable 3-0 win over Swansea City at the weekend, Ipswich have just one defeat at home in 17 games this term.

In another early kick-off on Saturday, the Tigers welcome third-placed Millwall to the MKM Stadium before heading back to Wrexham, and a third meeting with the Welsh club this term. Phil Parkinson’s men are sixth after their latest success over the weekend.

What happens in the next week will no doubt have a major say in the final outcome of the season for City, with only 10 games left once these three have been taken care of, but in their position, it’s something to relish a year on from their struggles against relegation.

Away from home, though, nobody in the league has a better record. Since losing at Derby County and QPR in November, the Tigers have won seven, with their only blot on an otherwise faultless copybook was the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day.

“They are very nice games in front of us,” Jakirovic said with a grin, before talking about City’s impressive away record, which has seen them claim seven wins and a draw in their last eight. Winning at Fratton Park also made it five successive wins on the road for the first time since 1966, and saw them top the away league table in the Championship.

“I think that we are now seven wins and one draw in the last eight. It shows that we feel comfortable in our away games,” the Croatian told Hull Live. “We will try to continue like this, of course.

“Ipswich will be a very demanding game because they’re also fighting for promotion. I’m expecting a good game. For me, every game is the same.

“Sheffield Wednesday was a very big test for us, but this just shows how very difficult the Championship is. You must prove everything on the pitch. I’m just hoping that we’ll play a good game there (at Portman Road).”
